- The new gfx cards are all in response to the DirectDraw libraries
- designed by microsoft to bring 'high performance games' to Windows
- 95/Windows NT.
-
- Different features in different cards will be handled transparently by
- the DirectDraw API. Combined with their forthcoming Direct3d extensions
- (which provide a similar generic API for 3d accelerator chipsets and for
- 3d code running on standard pentium or pentium MMX chips) you'll start
- seeing some VERY fast PC games running at high-resolution.
-
- Many PC gfx chips have had high-speed blitters and other internal
- features that haven't been available to programmers before (the only
- things that would use the features were the windows display drivers).
- This is changing.
-
- As Microsoft has now told the gfx chip manafacturers that they MUST
- support certain features (including multiple overlays, which means
- multiple playfields, not just double, limited by display ram only) we'll
- start seeing a whole range of very clever chips on the market, within a
- couple of months we'll see the first cards.
-
- Yes. No copper, no line-by-line effects (unless triggered by interrupts,
- which is messy but possible), but you cannot ignore the sheer power these
- chips will offer.
-
- Given a choice between one of these new SVGA chipsets and a more
- amiga-oriented chipset with (say) 1/20 of the pixel pushing power, I know
- which one I'd rather have in my Amiga.
